Generation Y might be a dogma after all, but sometime you would just notice things further when someone had prod you into it. clear evidence is everywhere among my friends, as i suddenly see it.
i am in generation Y, and based on wikipedia, the cutoff age for gen Y is babies born in 1981 onwards. These are the people who finish the highschool right about when the millennial year startss (year 2000)...some facts abt Gen Y that makes me go :O
- Gen Y willing to trade billable hours for better work life balance. they also tend to be team oriented, because of the team sports, or play group during the early age (tadika geddit??)
- Gen Y are tech savvy (hell yes) and craves attention in the form of feedback and guidance, well, we do post things in FB and responding to comments didnt we all? narcissism makes some ppl load their self picture in front of a mirror i guess.
- we were called to be closer to our parents than the baby boomers (our parents) who tend to show they can be better off without parents. my debate is that with the rising cost of living, and space, we end up staying at home. I saw few married couple still live in with the parents. no suprise here.
- tend to get bored easily... is also a trait obviously seen as these generation gets employer on their feet securing interesting job with a competence worker. else, we tend to switch job easily to feed the job satisfaction.
- Loves to travel, need me to say more? i blame airasia :)
in many ways i can soo totally relate to this. I did switch my job to be back in KL, with a lesser pay. among few companies that made offer to me, i dump the one with more $$$ that left their HR scratching his head. i choose the current one because it allows me to be on flexi hour that i can get my morning run/workout as long as im delivering my work.
i had another friend that quit her job and went to island to become a dive master, and in the end getting paid accompanying divers within the waters. she then work as a starbucks barrista for few months, suffice her coffee interest and is now in new zealand with her life saving, moving from one town to another and working as whatever that can fund her travel.
another friend of mine just quit the engineering world and became a teacher to feed the passion on knowledge sharing, with a 1/3 of the engineering pay. between the job transition, my friend is now in spain walking from one city to another with a backpack hoping to traverse few hundred km within 30 days. gila i tell u.
well, to be honest i was also in the same state. i wanted to see nepal himalaya last april, and i was determine to take unpaid leave for this purpose. a friend was asking me what if the unpaid leave was not a possible option, considering im a new employee. i answered "i would resign, and think about my next job upon return from nepal"... im just glad i didnt have to.
now tell me, you are not denying about your generation rights rite?
;)
